Frequently asked

Questions about working with SHR

What does SHR do on the ground?

Integrated invasive plant management (mechanical and chemical as needed), native planting and seeding, live staking, wattles, and hemp erosion matting, soil preparation and amendment, retention pond and wetland restoration, sediment and debris removal, trail building and site access, heavy equipment operation, and ongoing monitoring, documentation, and adaptive management.

Can you come see my site?

Yes. We offer a flat $200 site assessment. A senior estimator or manager walks your property, and you receive a comprehensive daily log of what we did, photos, our discussion notes, an overview and evaluation of your property, approximate timeline estimates, an open-source questionnaire of resources for your site, and an open line of follow-up messages so you know exactly what we recommend and identify. It can stand alone as a single service or be bundled into further work. Travel is added to this rate for sites beyond the Greater Victoria region.

How do I know if my project is too small?

Give us a call and we'll tell you. We turn down work that isn't a fit for our methods or our services. Sometimes that just means we'd have to charge you more for work someone else is better suited to do, so we'll point you to the right people: a native-plant or general landscaper, a hardscaper, or an arborist. Our goal is the best outcome for your site, and if that isn't us, we'll say so.

Do you work off Vancouver Island?

Yes. For projects of the right scale, location isn't a barrier, our crew will travel anywhere in British Columbia. We're especially drawn to large-scale restoration. Smaller off-island jobs may not pencil out on their own, so reach out and we'll tell you honestly.

Do you work the Gulf Islands and smaller islands?

Yes. Our crew usually travels by BC Ferries, and we move equipment and materials the same way, or barge them when a load exceeds ferry capacity. Travel time is built into our reduced general-labour rate so getting there doesn't hold your project back.

How does mobilization work outside Comox and Victoria?

We keep travel and the actual work separate on your estimate. Crew travel time is billed at our reduced general-labour rate, so you can see clearly what the project itself costs versus what it costs to get us there, and a full day of on-site work never gets eroded by the drive. When a job needs the crew overnight, accommodation and a living-out allowance are included and laid out up front.

How do you process payments?

We accept e-transfer, EFT (direct deposit), and credit cards. Lyn at SHR Solutions is your contact for payment options, feel free to reach out to her at lyn@shrsolutions.ca with any questions.

Do you use herbicide?

We use integrated invasive plant management: a mix of methods, mechanical and chemical, applied as the site needs. Chemical applications are done by licensed applicators on biological timing, with documentation and spray logs.

How are you different from a landscaper?

We're not landscaping. We work with a deep understanding and a scientific lens for how ecosystems evolve and thrive together. We work with biological timing and seasonality so that every treatment, native planting, and stream-work happens when it's most effective, when environmental impact is lowest, and when it delivers the best results. For example, unless a planting is set up with full irrigation, most restoration planting is done in fall, so plants go in dormant and unstressed and don't need watering through their first season.
